There are firewalls to shield you from Internet attacks (both internet traffic and local programs attempting to gain access when they should not). However, sometimes you would like to allow normally blocked traffic through your firewall. For that, you will need to enable a port. In this article, we will guide you through the whole procedure to enable a port on the firewall in Windows 10.

Open a port in the Windows 10 Firewall

To enable a port on the firewall in Windows 10, follow this procedure step by step.

Click the Search button on the taskbar. Type Windows firewall in the search box and then choose the Windows Defender Firewall option as the following image is showing.

As soon as you click the Windows Defender Firewall option, the following screen will display.

Now click the Advanced settings option from the left side of the screen as highlighted in the above image. After that, the following screen will open.

Here click the Inbound Rules from the left side of the screen. The right side will show a pane. Click the New Rule option from the right side of the screen as highlighted in the above image.

Note: If you want to open a port for outgoing traffic, then click the Outbound Rules instead of Inbound Rules.

As you click the New Rule option, the following dialogue box will appear.

Now click the Port radio button, then click the Next button as highlighted in the above image.

Now click the TCP or UDP port radio button. After that click the Specific local ports and enter the ports in the textbox as per given examples. Then click the Next button as highlighted in the above image.

On the next screen, click Allow the connection radio button. Then click the Next button as highlighted in the above image.

Check the Domain, Private and Public checkboxes and click the Next button as highlighted in the above image.

Type the Name of the rule and Description (It is optional). Then click the Finish button as highlighted in the above image. The rule will be created after this. You can disable the rule anytime by right clicking and choosing the Disable Rule option as the following image is showing.

Conclusion

By following this procedure, you will be able to enable a port on the firewall in Windows 10.
