Windows 10 operating system possesses a number of security features along with a built-in firewall that protects your system against unauthorized access, unwanted traffic, and malware etc.
Basically, a firewall acts as a filter for incoming and outgoing connections. It blocks unnecessary applications and programs to communicate with your system. Although builtin firewall with default settings does a pretty good job, still you have to set up and customize it for more security. Like some applications cannot work properly because they are blocked by the firewall, so you need to create rules to allow them manually.
Set up a firewall on your Windows 10 computer
Go to Control panel> System and Security>Windows Defender Firewall. Alternatively, you can also type firewall in the search bar of your Windows 10 computer and from the search results select Windows Defender Firewall.
This will bring the Windows Defender Firewall screen where you can configure basic and advanced settings for the firewall.
Windows let you connect to one of two types of network i.e private and public networks. When a private network is configured, other users can see you on networks. That allows them to share files and media with you. Like when you are at home or work, you may want to share files with others. When a public network is configured, you get hidden from other users, like in airports, coffee shop, you will not want your system to be seen by others.
Turn on or off the Firewall
To turn on or off the firewall, go to option Turn Windows defender Firewall on or off.
You can turn on the firewall by selecting the option Turn on Windows Defender Firewall. You can also turn it off, but that is not recommended.
Below this, there is an option to block all connections even those in the list of allowed apps. This option is useful when you are in a public place and want extra security.
There is another option if you checked it, let will let you notify when Firewall blocks an app.
On the left side of current windows, click on Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
Another window will appear. In these windows, all the options are greyed out. To edit them, click on Change Settings.
Now you can see that the windows firewall has the options to allow for incoming connections on public or private networks. To allow an app, select it by clicking the left side checkbox, or find the App or a program that is not listed by clicking the option below Allow another app…
Another window will pop-up, Click Browse to add an app, then click on Add to insert the App in the list.
After the app is added, tickmark the checkboxes against the app whether private or public. Choose the option that matches perfectly to your network environment.
After you have done with the basic configuration, Click Ok. You have done with the basic setup of the Windows firewall.
Besides the basic setup of windows 10 firewall, you can also go to advanced options that let you configure custom rules based on ports, protocols and IP addresses. Windows 10 firewall is quite advanced but once you learn it, you can allow or block any application that you want to.
