An Edge Transport Server is a routing server that routes emails inside and outside of the exchange organization. It accepts emails coming into the organization from Internet and external organizations, processes the emails to protect against spams and viruses. You can also apply rules, and enforce limits on messages as they pass through the servers in your environment.

It is deployed separately on some server and not along with any other Exchange server role.
