Sometimes while working on a particular application, we switch to some other application to quickly see or verify something. For example, while browsing the Web, you might want to quickly switch to the terminal application where you've issued a download command for some tool, just to see its progress.

If you are on Ubuntu, and you aren't particularly used to the Alt+Tab way of switching apps, then clicking apps' icons on the Unity Launcher is the other obvious way. If you go that way, then you have to click the app's icon to see what's going on, and once you're done, click the minimize button on the app's window to come back to the app you were earlier using.

But do you know that there's a way using which you can click the app's icon to minimize it as well? This means you don't have to move the mouse pointer between switching to the app and minimizing it. This feature is known as Minimize on Click, and is available on both Ubuntu 14.04LTS and 16.04LTS.

Enable Minimize on Click on Ubuntu 14.04LTS

To enable the feature on Ubuntu version 14.04LTS, you need first install the Compiz Config Settings manager, something which you can do using the following command:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Once installed, open the app through Unity Dash, and click the Ubuntu Unity Plugin under the Desktop category:

Compiz Config Settings Manager

Then go to the Launcher tab, and select the Minimize Single Window Applications option:

Launcher Tab of the settings manager

That's it. This will enable the feature on your Ubuntu 14.04 box.

Enable Minimize on Click on Ubuntu 16.04LTS

To enable the feature on Ubuntu version 14.04LTS, you need first install the Ubuntu Tweak Tool, something which you can easily do using Ubuntu Software application. Once installed, open the app from Unity Dash, click the Launcher tab, and then select the Minimize single window applications on click option.

Unity Tweak Tool

That's it. This will do the needful for you.

Command line way of enabling/disabling Minimize on Click

Irrespective of whether you are on Ubuntu 14.04LTS or 16.04LTS, you can enable and disable the feature using the following commands, respectively.

gsettings set org.compiz.unityshell:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/unityshell/ launcher-minimize-window true
gsettings set org.compiz.unityshell:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/unityshell/ launcher-minimize-window false

So, these are the ways in which you can enable/disable the Minimize on Click feature on Ubuntu 1404LTS and 16.04LTS. Keep in mind that the feature works for single window applications only.
